Last week was one of the most insane weeks I've ever had. Take a sixth grade drama production, volunteering to create drama program, setting up and cleaning up dessert table for post-drama production party, shuttling to and from rehearsals, no adjustment in Dawn's regular schedule for all these extra-curricular activities, and insanity ensues.
I found myself only doing the absolute necessary for work. I skimmed a small bit off the work pile, yet every day, that pile was growing and growing and growing ...
As I always do in times of schedule distress, I look at time management. Yes, I had made choices to volunteer, spend an entire Tuesday writing/playing, four meetings, and two networking lunches. While these choices were all good, there wasn't enough time to do everything. I wanted the following:
- a solid work block - all day to work with no meetings or appointments
- writing every day for 30 minutes
- a 1/2 day writing block
What this meant was some rearranging of my life. I already had regular appointments on Monday, most Wednesdays, and Thursdays. If I wanted an entire day to get work done, I'd have to use Tuesday or Friday. Tuesday was my writing day, and I didn't really want to give that up. Friday was certainly a possibility, but I play a lot on Fridays. :-) That wouldn't make for much of a consistent work schedule. So here's my plan. Monday has its regular appointment, Tuesday will be my new full-day work block, Wednesday is its regular sometimes-I-have-appointments/meetings-and-sometimes-I-don't day, Thursday has its regular hot girl lunch and meetings, and Friday morning is my new writing block with an afternoon play time.
Now that all sounds good, but here's the kicker. We just got a new puppy on Sunday. That sort of throws my new schedule out the window. That, and the fact that this week is Thanksgiving week.
Onto Samwise. He's named after my favorite, most loyal, courageous, wonderful, sweet hobbit, Samwise Gamgee, from Lord of the Rings. Samwise the hobbit is everything I would ever want in a dog.
(For those of you who remember my trials with Bandit, here's the difference. With Samwise, we know he's a puppy. We know we have a lot of work ahead of us. We're putting up with whining and crying in the middle of the night, house training in the rain, chewing, discipline, more chewing, crate training, not being able to be away from the house for very long, and yet more chewing. But we expected, and do expect, all of those things. After six months without Maggie, we're ready for another furry companion. Welcome, Samwise.)
