I read an article a few weeks ago about how more women are playing games on-line. They do this to avoid doing other things. (Side note: I've tried to find this article again, but I can't. I read it, absorbed the information, and it stuck with me. I'm sad that I don't have the reference to send you to. Flog me please!)
Now that I'm in the groove with developing Write Well U, it's important that I spend my time wisely (I will admit that there are times that it's important to spend one's time unwisely!).
It's very easy for me to get caught up in shadow activities, those things that take up time and keep me from doing other things.
These are my shadow activities:
- Check email
- Call a friend on the phone, especially my friend who I know can keep me on the phone for an hour, easy
- Write blog posts
- Check email
- Try to find the source of the article on shadow activities
- Take care of all those little things that didn't bother me before (pick up the chewed up pieces of comforter in Bandit's crate, take the mail into my office)
- Check email
I'm not being bratty or funny (well, maybe a little funny) by noting "check email" several times; I really could distracted by checking email many, many times a day. My inclination is to constantly click that Outlook icon, and I constantly have to hold myself back and only check during office hours. As a matter of fact, sometimes I can be really good about not checking my business email, but I definitely let the personal email restriction slide. I'll check that with no qualms whatsoever. And I shouldn't. It's a shadow activity, too.
What are your shadow activities, and what do they keep you from doing?
(By the way, if you know the article I'm referencing, please comment and let us all know. My mind will be at rest if you do!)
